Folkloric Fruit
Client: Student Assignment
Problem: Create an illustration of three foods with some connecting theme. Experiment with brushes and textures.
Solution: An illustration of three fruits commonly associated with ill fates when eaten. Focus was on the connections drawn (figuratively and literally) between the fruit, experimentation with multiple different brushes, and further exploration with a painterly style.
The Silver Bough (Celtic mythology) - sends you to the Other World
Pomegranate (Greek mythology) - which kept Persephone in the underworld when she ate the seeds
Tomato - representing the forbidden fruit from the Christian Bible. Chosen both to avoid “doubling up” on having multiple apples, and because tomatoes were thought to be poisonous due to the fact they’re related to nightshade and absorbed lead from pewter plates.
